Skiing with a Legend – A Memory of Warren Miller

As a young skier growing up, the idea of meeting Warren Miller—let alone skiing and working alongside him—was beyond imagination. But one day in the Colorado Rockies, that dream became reality.

We were filming in China Bowl on the backside of Vail. Warren, in his signature yellow jacket, was right there beside us. Brian Sisselman was manning the 16mm camera, and Cindy Nelson—an icon in her own right—was carving perfect turns down the sunlit slope. I had the honour of photographing the moment, capturing not just the action, but the energy and joy that Warren brought to every shoot.

Later, I joined him for a ski-along segment at Beaver Creek. It was classic Warren: storytelling, skiing, laughing. That run left a smile on my face that took years to erase. Honestly, it felt like something bigger than meeting a Pope.

Warren Miller didn’t just document skiing—he inspired generations of us to chase powder, embrace winter, and live our own mountain stories. I’m grateful to have shared a few frames of film and a few turns with the man who taught us all to “go out there and ski it.”
