In a bold move straight out of the Colorado playbook, Keystone Resort surprised the ski world Saturday afternoon by announcing—just 90 minutes in advance—that it would open for the 2025–26 ski season, edging out nearby Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin) to become the first U.S. ski area to start spinning lifts this winter.
Earlier that morning, A-Basin had declared it would open Sunday at 8:30 a.m. MDT, seemingly securing the annual “first-to-open” crown. But by 2 p.m., Keystone had flipped the script, dropping the surprise news and opening later that same day.
It’s not the first time the Summit County neighbors have gone head-to-head in this friendly rivalry. Back in 2019, Keystone’s early-season announcement was outdone when A-Basin quietly fired up its lifts the afternoon before Keystone’s planned debut.
This year, Keystone’s quick start featured one open run and a hike-to terrain park, served by the River Run Gondola and Montezuma Express. Guests were required to download, but spirits were high with a live DJ, $5.50 beers, and plenty of early-season stoke to mark Keystone’s 55th winter season.
“We’re thrilled to kick off the season here at Keystone with over two miles of skiing and riding,” said Shannon Buhler, Vice President and General Manager. “Our team has poured their hearts into making this early opening possible—it’s a special moment for our employees, our community, and everyone who just can’t wait to get back on snow.”
Arapahoe Basin followed through Sunday morning, opening Black Mountain Express with a single run to the base and live music throughout the day.
Both resorts are aiming to expand terrain quickly, with overnight lows dipping into the single digits this week—perfect conditions for snowmaking.
Keystone’s snow guns are a large, advanced system used to prepare the mountain for the ski season. The resort has 672 snowmaking guns and a computerized system that allows them to make snow when conditions are right.
The unofficial race to open may be over, but for Colorado skiers and riders, winter has officially begun.
Ski The World!
