The US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame is gaining two valuable members of the Powder Magazine family.
It was just announced that Powder founders Jake Moe, and his brother Dave Moe (AKA Captain Powder), will be inducted into the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2023.
The announcement was made on September 19th, 2023 at the Hall’s free to attend class announcement at Black Rocks Mountain Resort in Park City, Utah.
Jake Moe tells his story, “The year was 1971 and I was on the Ski Patrol in Sun Valley Idaho. I ‘escaped’ the classroom at the University of Washington in the Winter of 1968 and fled to Sun Valley, Idaho and joined the Ski Patrol. After a couple of years of blowing off cornices, rescuing injured skiers and lifting a ton of chair lift tower pads…I knew that Ski Patrol worked couldn’t be my life long job. Then I saw a copy one of the first copies of Surfer Magazine…and, the rest is history. There had to be a magazine created for skiers as Surfer was for surfers. And, on the Christmas Single Chairlift it hit me like a bolt of lightening. All alone, I blurted out…”I am going to start a MAGAZINE!”
The two dominant ski magazines in the market were Skiing and Ski…and quite frankly I didn’t think they conveyed the true joy of the sport of skiing. They were mostly packed with car and cigarette ads without amazing photography and bitting editorial. However, the task of taking on the ‘big boys’ was a daunting project…summed up by the Publisher of Skiing when he told me to my face that I surely going to fail…because as he said…”We own the market!” That claim was just the challenge that I needed!
So, with brother Dave, we embarked on the most impossible task of creating our masterpiece…Powder Magazine. Good enough, according to skiers that told us…to be kept as keepsakes around that house for decades. Powder To The People!”
Congratulations Jake and Moe!
Ski the World!
