Salt Lake to Host 2034 Winter Olympics

It’s official, the 2034 Winter Olympics will return to Salt Lake City.

After awarding the city exclusive negotiating rights for the games last year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially ratified Salt Lake City as the host of the 2034 Winter Games following a Wednesday morning vote in Paris, where the 2024 Summer Games are about to get underway.

Earlier on Wednesday, the IOC provisionally selected the French regions of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur to host the 2030 games.

Utah’s capital city first hosted the games in 2002 and has preserved the infrastructure built for those games in the intervening years. The 2034 games will require no permanent construction—a sustainable approach the IOC welcomed, according to Salt Lake City bid team spokesperson Tom Kelly, who spoke about the bid process in a recent episode of “Last Chair” the Ski Utah podcast.

The layout for the 2034 games will be compact, with all venues within a one-hour drive of the Athlete Village on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. All 13 of the venues are already in place, each having hosted events in the 2002 games.

Park Place, the city block in downtown Salt Lake City near Temple Square, which served as a concert venue and medals plaza in the 2002, will also host the Big Air event in 2034, with organizers planning to erect a large temporary ramp for skiing and snowboarding.

Among the other venues will be Deer Valley Resort (freestyle moguls and aerials); Park City Mountain Resort (halfpipe and slope style); Snowbasin Resort (Alpine skiing); Soldier Hollow Nordic Center (biathlon, cross-country, and Nordic combined); and the Utah Olympic Park (ski cross, luge, Nordic combined skiing, ski jumping, snowboard parallel, and snowboard cross, among other events).

“We are honored to be confirmed as an official venue for the 2034 Olympic Winter Games,” said Deer Valley president and COO Todd Bennett. “Our collaboration with the Salt Lake City-Utah 2034 organizing committee has been excellent, and we look forward to further strengthening this partnership as we prepare for the games’ return to Utah.”

By 2034, Deer Valley will have nearly tripled its skiable acreage with the Deer Valley East expansion, phase one of which is already underway.

The upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics will be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy.
