Angeles Mountain Partners has proudly announced its acquisition of Mt. Waterman Ski Lifts, signaling a new era for this historic mountain resort located just an hour from downtown Los Angeles. Known for its proximity and iconic status among Southern California’s outdoor enthusiasts, Mt. Waterman offers a unique blend of accessibility and mountain adventure.
Founded in 1937, Mt. Waterman is celebrated for its pristine powder, which notably surpasses nearby competitors like Mt. High and Big Bear by over 40 inches annually. The resort provides a variety of terrain, including beginner areas and an extensive range of lift-accessed backcountry space—features that have kept this gem relatively under the radar for the last two decades.
The acquisition by AMP not only turns a new page in Mt. Waterman’s storied history but also introduces significant enhancements aimed at enriching the visitor experience. These include a modern snowmaking system, a new tubing hill, glamping facilities, upgraded dining options, and the introduction of the exclusive Waterman100 membership program. This program offers privileged access to private powder days, helipad usage, and premium event access, marking a shift towards a more exclusive resort model.
This pivot has raised some eyebrows within the community, with concerns about Mt. Waterman becoming a resort primarily for the elite. The new Waterman100 program, in particular, is seen as a move to cater to a wealthier demographic, offering benefits that could restrict access to the best conditions for general visitors. This program offers perks such as private powder days and helipad access, which are typically associated with luxury services. Additionally, while the public will still have access to the resort, the best conditions on heavy snowfall days will be reserved for Waterman100 members, suggesting a shift towards a more exclusive, club-like atmosphere. Such exclusivity is a departure from the more inclusive vibe that Mt. Waterman has traditionally upheld.
Despite these changes, Joshua Shelton, Co-Founder of AMP, assures that the essence of Mt. Waterman will be preserved. “This is a special place,” Shelton remarked. “We’re here to enhance Mt. Waterman, not to change what people have always loved about it. Our aim is to keep this as a place where all who appreciate the mountains can feel at home.”
AMP’s strategy includes a phased renovation plan, which will introduce a new special events venue, updated facilities for warming and club gatherings, a mountain bike park, and a jib/board park. These upgrades are intended to improve the overall guest experience while balancing modern demands with the traditional spirit of the mountain.
As Mt. Waterman embraces these changes under new management, the community watches closely. The hope is that while the resort evolves, it remains a welcoming space for all who treasure the mountains, not just those who can afford an exclusive pass.
