Earlier today at Georgia’s popular Gudauri ski resort, near the capital Tbilisi, a ski-lift accident left eleven people injured when the chair’s brakes failed and sent passengers sliding backwards down the hill.
The ski lift began running at high speed in reverse and people had to jump off of the out-of-control lift to avoid being crushed at the bottom of the hill.
“The ski lift stopped and started going in reverse,” said Yuri Leontyev, who was on the lift. “We had to jump from it, because at the bottom (of the hill) it was total trash and no chance to stay safe.”
The video footage below from onlookers shows some passengers jumping off the lift, while others are flung violently from the chair as it whipped around the loading station.
Miraculously the eleven injured passengers suffered only minor injuries. This is a good outcome for the nature of the accident due to the easy jump for passengers. Unfortunately it’s best to always have an exit plan when riding a chairlift.
