Huge new ski area proposed in the Alps

Plans are in the works to link the French resorts of Alpe d’Huez and Les 2 Alpes. If the lift linking the two resorts in the southern Alps is built it would create one of the largest ski centers in the world. In fact, the new ski area would be 450+kms (111,000+ acres) and would be second only in size to the mighty Les 3 Vallees.

The proposal new lift to connect the two areas would be similar to the one constructed in Whistler and more recently Avoriaz. It would be 8 km long and could take up to 3,000 skiers and snowboarders per hour and the journey time would be 18 minutes.

The idea has been floated for more than 3 decades but discussions began in earnest in 2004.

According to reports, the linking lift is now scheduled for 2020.
