Eaglecrest Ski Area is located on Douglas Island in the U.S. state of Alaska, across Gastineau Channel from Juneau. The area has 4 lifts (1 rope tow, 3 double chairlifts)with the new lift Black Bear installed May 2009 accessing 640 acres (2.6 km2), with 31 marked alpine runs and 3 Nordic skiing loops, and access to world class backcountry. Vertical drop is 1,400 ft (430 m) with an average snowfall of 200-300″. Although the compound is currently public property, some legislators of the region, including Randy Wanamaker, have suggested privatization. Currently, a new ski lift is being built and will be ready this year.
